Why dog training? I have always loved animals and more particularly dogs. I had gone to college with hopes of going to vet school someday. That didn't work out so I worked as a chemist in specialty chemical industries and finally decided that wasn't the life for me. I had started taking obedience classes and agility classes with my dogs. I had so much fun I finally asked one of my instructors "How do I become a dog trainer?".
After some research I discovered the San Francisco SPCA Academy for dog trainers. I was fortunate to attend the academy in the fall of 2004. It was such an amazing experience and I discovered that I just had a natural ability with dogs. The academy was run by Jean Donaldson and Janis Bradley. I graduated in December of 2004 and began my new careeer. I have to thank Becky Jankowski of Pawsitive Performance Dog Training in Downers Grove, IL for letting me jump in right after graduation and teach her Family Dog 1 classes. It was very helpful in getting me started on my own.
In 2005 my husband, Eric, and I decided to move back to our home state of NY and found the most amazing property possible. The property already had a dog boarding kennel which gave me the opportunity to start my training business without having to get a "real" job. I worked at veterinary hospitals in high school and college taking care of the animals that were boarding so I had that experience. I have to say, looking back, those were my favorite jobs ever (until now!). The kennel opened in the summer of 2006 and MACDoggies Country Kennel, Inc. was born.
I absolutely love what I do! I enjoy having the different dogs stay at the kennel and it is so fun to watch dogs and families progress in my obedience classes. My philosophy is never push and make sure the animal is as comfortable as I can make it for them. Each and everyone is an individual and I feel that to treat them all the same would be a huge disservice to them. I am thankful everyday to be able to do something I love and am honored that people trust me with their special family members while they are on vacation
Update - September 1, 2015, I recevied notification that I had graduated from The Karen Pryor Academy and am now a certified training partner!
